We recently heard from Shirley, a Victor Harbor local who became critically ill when she was far from medical aid.
Shirley arrived in her 78 Series Troopy at Mungerannie in outback South Australia for some R&R, but within a few hours was found unconscious in the freezing cold. The RFDS was called and immediately tasked.
Soon after RFDS Doctor Jessica Martyn and Flight Nurse Chris Green arrived, Shirley sustained not one, but two cardiac arrests.
Dr Martyn recalled Shirley's vitals appeared normal on arrival at Mungerannie and said:
"When her first cardiac arrest happened, it was well and truly out of the blue."
Dr. Martyn and Chris performed CPR and advanced resuscitation twice. Shirley remembers little of the medical episode, but does recall being on the back of a ute knowing she was about to be emergency airlifted.
It’s only with the generosity of people like you that we are able to airlift more than 100 Australians every day.
Thank you for all that you do for your Flying Doctor. It means so much to me and I know it means everything to the thousands of patients we assist every year (and their families).
